Announcement
Dear Friends,
As you may have already known from your friends or previous posts, Luzhi, one of our fellow students at UCSD, unfortunately and accidentally succumbed to drowning in the community swimming pool last Saturday (April 10, 2010). As friends of Luzhi, we were all shocked and then feel the deepest sadness and pain for her and her family.
Luzhi was born in a poor family in Lake County, Anhui Province, China. In 2001, she was admitted to the Northwest Agriculture University and became the only college student in her family. She was remarkably diligent and received many college honors which enabled her to get her fully supported by academic scholarship. After graduation she continued to pursue the PhD degree there. In the September of 2008, funded by Chinese Government Fellowship, she came to Scripps Institution of Oceanography for a two-year exchange program and originally scheduled to return home this summer.
Once a blossoming brilliant young girl with colorful dreams to fulfill, she cherished so much hope for the future. She was the biggest hope and pride of her family. However, all of a sudden, she left us forever last Saturday.
For the parents and the two elder brothers of Luzhi, they lost their beloved daughter and sister, the only girl in the family. They had even refused to believe the news from the Chinese consulate that called them from LA. Realizing that it is the fact, they are now drowning in huge sorrow. It must have been the most difficult time in their lives for them to go through for the past few days, and in the future as well, maybe a few weeks, or months, or even years.
Luzhi's family has very low income and no savings. The loss of their daughter is a huge impact to them both emotionally and economically. Struggling to accept the fact that they have lost their beloved daughter, they are also having a very difficult time trying to get enough funding to cover the expenses for the flight to San Diego, food and lodge, and funeral affairs.
We could never get a lost life back. But at least we can comfort Luzhi's spirit by helping her family. To make a donation, please read the detailed information below. Your help is greatly appreciated!
